I’ve recently signed up to receive Trendwatching’s regular updates entitled, The Trend Briefing. The company itself scans the globe for the most promising consumer trends, insights and related hands-on business ideas. If you’re interested in the future of business consumerism then you might like to take a look.
Apparently the concept of everything from frequent flying points, personal bankers, upgrades and rewards are now so prevalent it is now a movement. The analysts of trendwatching.com coined the term referring to “a new breed of perks and privileges, added to brands’ regular offerings, [and] satisfying consumers’ ever-growing desire for novel forms of status and/or convenience, across all industries.”
Consumers are a lot more savvy than say ten years ago and they’ll be looking more for ‘value’ particularly in these recessionary times; there could be attempts by businesses to actually reverse perks. This has happened with some of the budget airlines whereby they don’t provide all the tea, coffee or in-flight service but provide cheaper airfares.
It could be that consumers have had just way too much of ‘perkonomics’ – particularly when they realise they’re probably paying for it anyway.
